The station celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special evening at Tapton Hall on 2 October 2026, bringing together around 100 invited guests to recognise five decades of broadcasting to Sheffield's hospitals.
The event welcomed past and present members, NHS colleagues, civic representatives and supporters to celebrate the volunteers who have provided music, entertainment and companionship to patients and staff since 1976.
The evening was hosted by Michael Harper, with speeches from Neil Saunderson Chair of SHR, Mahmud Nawaz, Chair STH, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Andrew Sanger, with the reverend Canon Kate Bottley, known to audiences through BBC Radio 2 and Gogglebox, bringing her trademark warmth and humour to the celebrations.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of long-service awards to five members who have given an incredible 139 years of service between them.
The recipients were Steve Flowers, with 46 years' service; Paul Denton, with 29 years; Jon Price, with 26 years; Neil Saunderson, with 21 years; and Tom Egan, with 17 years.
